BLOG NUMBER TWELVE - A FEW SAYINGS OF LORD JESUS AND BEATITUDES- AS SELECTED BY SHRI AMBARISHA VARMA

A few  sayings of Lord Jesus Christ-
as selected by Shri Ambarisha Varma
-      from The New Testament
-
I am the Light of the World.
I am the Good Shepherd.
I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No man cometh unto the Father; but by me.

You are the Light of the World.
You are the salt of the Earth.
I am the door, by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved.

If any man will come after me, let him deny himself and take up his Cross and follow me.

For whosoever will save his life, shall lose it and whosoever will lose his life for my sake, shall find it.

Verily, I say unto you, except you be converted and become as little children, you shall not enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

All things whatsoever you shall ask in prayer, believing, you shall receive.

Thou shall love the Lord, thy God, with all thy heart and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

Thou shall love thy neighbour as thyself.
If any man desire to be first, the same shall be the last of all and a servant of all.

For with God, all things are possible.
The Son of Man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister and to give his life a ransom for many.

Forgive, if you have aught against any, that your Father also who is in Heaven may forgive you for your trespasses.

Verily, verily, I say unto thee – except a man be born again, he cannot see the Kingdom of God.

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son-that whosoever believeth in him should have everlasting life.

God is a Spirit and they that worship Him, must worship Him in Spirit and in Truth.

Beatitudes

Blessed are the poor in the spirit,
For theirs is the Kingdom of God.

Blessed are they that mourn for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are they, which do hunger and thirst after righteousness sake, for they shall be filled.

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.

Blessed are the pure in Heart,
For they shall be called the children of God.

Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.

Blessed are you, when Men shall revile you, and persecute you and shall say all manner of evil against you,
falsely for my sake.

Let your life so shine before Men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father, who is in Heaven.

Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you and persecute you.

As you would that Men should do to you,
do you also to them likewise.

Judge not, and you shall not be judged.

Give and it shall be given unto you. Knock, and it shall be opened unto you, search and it shall be found.

Whosoever cometh to me and hears my sayings and doeth them is like a man who built a house and digged deep and laid the foundation on a rock. And the Flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house and could not shake it, for it was founded upon a rock.

Why beholdest thou, the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but perceives not the beam that is in thine own eye?

The Ten Commandments from The Bible

I am the Lord, thy God. Thou shalt have no other Gods before me.
Thou shall not make unto thee any graven image or any likeness of anything that is in Heaven above or that is in the water under the earth.  Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them.

Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord, thy God, in vain.

Remember the Sabbath Day to keep it holy.

Honour thy Father and thy Mother.

Thou shalt not kill.

Thou shalt not commit adultery.

Thou shall not steal.

Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thy neighbour’s wife nor his man servant, nor his maid servant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that is thy neighbour’s.

The End.

BLOG NUMBER ELEVEN- LIFE OF MARKENDEYA MAHARISHI- AS NARRATED BY SHRI AMBARISHA VARMA

Life of Markendeya Maharishi
Mrukundu Maharishi married a very pious satvic lady called “Marudhvathi” and started his life as a grihasta, in an ashrama. He was a Maha Tapaswi who spent his time by doing daily karmas and service to the Paramatma. His wife too, spent all her time in serving her husband, participating in all his dharmic activities and lived as a shadow of him. Inspite of life being carried on for a long time, she did not beget a child. So, they were sad and kept on feeling this.

The Muni knew that if one does not beget children in grihastashram, they will have no place in the higher lokas, so he intensified his Vratas and daily Niyamas, but observed that these also did not help.

He decided to pray to Lord Eshwara and ask for a boon for begetting a child, he sat in Tapas. Lord Eshwara was pleased by the Tapas of the Muni, appearing before him, told the Muni to ask for a boon. The Muni replied – Oh Lord! I did not want anything. I am glad to see that you have come here, but one in grihastashrama does not beget a child, may or may not get Mukti, so kindly grant me a male child for this purpose.

The Lord asked the Muni-Do you want a child who is without character and with bad qualities, would live long as a chiranjeevi, or a child who is full of good qualities and of great punya, but would live only for sixteen years? Select any one.
The Muni replied- Of what use is a child with bad qualities but with long life? It is neither useful to him nor to his parents, whereas a child with good qualities, will bring fame to the Vamsha. So even if he were to have a short life, it does not matter. Kindly grant a son of that nature.

The Lord said- As you wish and He disappeared. The Muni was very much pleased, time passed on and his wife showed signs of bearing a child and the couple became very happy. He performed all the dharmic requisites for the pregnant lady, regularly.

He satisfied all her wishes, invited the Brahmins often for chanting of the mantras, and obtained blessings from them. After the ninth month, on a sacred day, the Rishi patni gave birth to a male child who looked as if it was an avatara of Lord Shiva, luminous, shining and perfect in all aspects. The Muni invited Brahmins and conducted all the necessary karmas in connection with the birth, gave all types of Dhanas, to them. He named the child as Markendeya.

When Markendeya completed his 5th year of age, the upa-nayana was performed and Mrukundu taught him all types of veda shastras, tarka, vyakarana and all that has to be learnt by a Munikumara.

Markendeya grew into a perfect Brahmachari radiating with Tejas. As days passed his father fell silent with worry with the thought that Markendeya will become 16 in a few years, and would leave his parents. At last he found a way to this. He called his son near him and began to speak- “Oh son! Today I will give you some upadesha, do hear! You are a child born out of grace of Lord Shiva and you have only 16 years of life, that is in the coming two or three years. You should do atma sadhana within this short span of life and for this, surrender to Parvathipathi and pray to Him. And whenever you come across brahmanas, rishis, elders, you should bow down to them fully with bhakthi, so that they will bless you saying ‘Dheerga Ayushman Bhava!’ (Long live). The words of such people will never prove false. Moreover the brahmins and the rishis never speak untruth, who knows by their blessings, your life span may increase”. He further told- Son, I will give you upadesha of Mruthyunjaya Mantra, you should utter it daily keeping Lord Shiva as your aradhya devatha. He initiated his son with the mantra as prescribed in the Shastras.

Markendeya followed his father’s instructions, proceeded towards the southern seas. There, in a quiet and beautiful spot, he built an ashrama and installed a Shiva Linga. He used to bring the bilva leaves and with shodashopachara, perform puja, thrice daily with the japa pf mrthyunjaya mantra, used to perform severe Tapas. Days passed on. He also did namaskara to the Brahmins and Rishis without fail and asked to be blessed for long life. In this way, Markendeya, spent his last years of life and there were only three days left, for the completion of his sixteenth year.

One early morning when Markendeya commenced his puja to Lord Shiva, the Saptarishis in a group, were passing in front of his ashram. At the sight of them, Markendeya, jumped and ran towards them and did full sashtanga pranams to each one of them.As per his prayer, the Saptarishis, blessed him saying Dheergayushmanbhava. After prostrating before all of them with great respect and devotion, with folded hands, he stood before them.

Then, Vashishta Maharishi, looked at the face of Markendeya and divined what was in store, became stunned, went near Kashyapa Maharishi and said – this young tapaswi is of alpa ayush and has only three days of life left over. We have all blessed him with long life! No speech of ours has become false, so far. Now, a time has come, when our speech will be proved false?  By this, all the Rishis became thoughtful and decided to approach Chaturmukha Brahma, who had written the fate of Markendeya. So, along with Markendeya, they all left for Brahma Loka. They all told Lord Brahma what had happened and asked for pariharas. He said – Respected Rishis, do not become frightened, no speech of yours has proved false till now, in future also it will not prove false, there is no reason to fear. This boy is performing japa on Lord Shiva, who is his aradhya devatha, who will relieve him of danger to life. The Saptarishis, satisfied with these words of Chaturmukha Brahma, brought Markendeya back to Bhu-Loka and left him at his ashrama.

In this way, three days passed on and the final day to leave his body arrived. Very early in the morning itself, Markendeya completed his bath, japas, niyamas and nityakarmas, he sat in front of the Shiva Linga. With a focussed mind, he commenced the Shiva Puja and was completely absorbed in it. Soon, Yama came there, seated on a buffalo and Markendeya saw him. Yama was looking very fierceful with his eyes emanating fire, the big sharp hairs on his body were capable of piercing the hearts of one, easily. Yama immediately threw his rope (paasha) around the neck of Markendeya and then addressing Yama, Markendeya told him- Oh! Yama Dharma Raja, now I am busy in puja of Lord Parameshwara, before completion of it, I shall not move from this place, so please wait.

Then Yama, with a smile, said- one should perform dharma karyas in young age itself and become perfect.  If one attempts to do sadhana, in one’s last days, one cannot complete it. I am the one who keeps Time, as soon as one’s lifetime is over. Let they be anyone- I will take them, no one has the capacity to stop me, do not waste time talking unnecessarily, so saying he pulled the pasha.

Markendeya said- Oh! Yama Dharma Raja! I asked you to wait not for me, I have uttered it only for your prosperity, I am in the puja of Lord Shankara and anyone who obstructs the puja of Lord Shankara, whosoever it may be, he cannot escape misery. A person like me need not tell you that a devotee of the Lord has no fear of anyone. If you move me from this place, your prosperity and good is going to be delayed.Yama, hearing these words of the boy, became furious with anger. He started pulling Markendeya by force of his rope. Then, Markendeya, immediately caught hold of the Shiva Linga near him saying- Oh Lord Paripoorna Mruthyunjaya, Kalyanadeva, the destructor of all fear, protect and pleaded with the Lord, repeating these words. Immediately Lord Shiva came out of the Shiva Linga, roaring like a Lion and fierceful sounds of Pralaya Kala and He kicked Yama be His foot and pushed him aside. As soon as Yama looked at the Lord, shining with the fearful sight of anger, he took to his heels, sat on his buffalo and left that place immediately.

Later Parameshwara after becoming peaceful, He took his devotee, lifted him up. Markendeya started repeating the mantras, praising Him. Lord Shiva, full of Grace and Bliss blessed Markendeya with a boon – You become a Chiranjeevi and He disappeared. From that day onwards, Yama did not dare come near Markendeya.

As told, Markendeya, spent his 16th year won over death itself, left for darshan of his parents, who were in grief thinking that their son had left this world. Markendeya did sashtang namaskara to both his parents. Is he really our son? Is he not dead? Has he come in a real body? So saying, without believing their eyes, passed their hands all over the body of Markendeya, embraced him and started pouring love and affection on him and became extremely happy,

Markendeya told his parents what had all happened, the darshan of the saptarishis, Lord Brahma and his blessings, how on the last day, Lord Shiva blessed him with Chiranjeevathva. Mrukundu said- By you not only have we become prosperous, our kula itself has become famous. Your mother who has given birth to you is a very devoted woman. In future, you will perform difficult Tapas and call for Nara-Narayana’s presence. By the grace of them, may you see the wonderful leelas and mayajalas not ever seen by any one, Sri Hari’s Maha Pralaya, may be seen by you in pratyaksha. You will obtain the title of ‘Maharishi’ in a very superior place. So saying, the parents blessed Markendeya,

Then Markendeya took the vow of performing difficult tapas, with shantha chitta, with Jata, Danda, Kamandala, Yagnopaveetha, Krishnanjana, Akshaya, garland of pearls and dharba. For his tapas, he chose a peaceful place in Himalayas, there on a rock called ‘Chitra’, he established    his parna kuteera. Nearby was a river called Pushpabhadra, there he sat in tapas. Near that punyabhoomi all round, lived Brahmins and there existed many clean water ponds. The bumblebees drunk with nectar and the cuckoo birds, sang filling the area with sweet music and the peacocks were dancing. A variety of different birds, made pleasant sounds. In such beautiful panoramic, peaceful   and wonderful place, Markendeya, established his ashrama.

For a period of six manvantaras, he performed severe tapas, worshipping Lord Sriman Narayana and by the power of Yoga, he had conquered the arishadvargas. The seventh Manvantara- Vaivaswatha, also commenced. The tapas had reached its zenith and was continuing, the flame of tapas touched Indraloka and Indra thought this mahatma has undertaken this staunch tapas in order to conquer his post and decided to disturb the tapas of Markendeya.

Indra summoned the Gandharvas, Apsaras, Manmatha, Vasantha, Shulayanchala, Kama and Madhu and told them all- You go down to Bhu Loka now itself and disturb the tapas of Markendeya in Himalayas. To this, Manmatha, laughed out loudly saying- what big work is this? The most attractive of apsaras- Punjikasthala started to go, telling that if Manmatha is there to protect her, whomsoever it may be, she will pierce his heart- she said with teasing laughter. All of them came down to Bhuloka, to the Himalayas, selected their suitable places and began to commence their assigned work.

Then, Markendeya, had finished his evening bath, Sandhya and the homa karyas, his body was shining like fire, seated in tapas. Then, Manmatha started blowing as if to bring in the fire of Kama. Vasantha brought about the Chandrodaya, many beautiful trees and plants sprang up, giving a very pleasant smell, all around. Manmatha positioned himself behind a big tree opposite the Rishi, was ready to shoot his five arrows towards the Rishi. The Gandharvas started singing, playing musical instruments, Punjika, clad in a thin silk saree, and commenced her dance, moving slowly. Marutha started blowing fast and her saree flew off in the air, and at that time, Manmatha let go of his five arrows towards Markendeya.

But everything became a waste. The arrows fell down broken, and there was no one to see the apsara, the gandharvas stopped their music and left the spot. Manmatha and Punjika felt thoroughly ashamed, returned back to Indra. Markendeya as before was absorbed in his tapas, seeing all this Nara Narayanas became pleased and gave their darshan to Markendeya. Narayana was of blue colour and Nara was of white in colour. They both had beautiful lotus like eyes, wearing robes made out of plant fibre, having krishnanjana, wearing sacred dhungura with thridanda kamandalas, on their chests was the yagnopaveetha, on their necks was seen a garland of Padmakshi,

These personalities who are respected by a host of Devathas, with their luminous bodies and wonderful stature, those Rishis of the Bhagavathamsha, stood before Markendeya. Markendeya opened his eyes slowly, saw them, got up immediately, did sashtang namaskara and stood with folded hands. He became emotional, his voice choked with feeling, he did not know what to speak. He only uttered ‘Namo Namaha’ and was silent. Then, he greeted them with his hands outstretched, offered them seats and washed their feet. He performed puja with flowers, dhoopa and sandal paste. He commenced praising them with saying “Oh Deva of all the Devas, four handed, being in form, destroyer of the wicked, please bless”-likewise Markendeya prayed.

Then Lord Sri Hari said- “Oh, famous among the Rishis, being in the Samadhi State always, having controlled the indriyas completely, maintaining full devotion on Me, performing the works prescribed in the Vedas, performing the Vratas, the Yama Niyamas and attained Siddhies out of it, to see such a one and to give boons, I have come. Ask the boons you wish”.

Markendeya submitted- Oh Achyutha, Pundarika, is there anything more profitable and sacred than your Darshan in this world? You have now bestowed on me that, now. I do not want anything other than this. Brahma and Rudra see you only with a heart and mind purified by Yoga, but I am seeing you in pratyaksha – what could be more superior to this? Yet, I would like to see the ‘Maya’ of yours- as to how from a Brahma to a germ, the Maya rules this world. Please grant me that said Markendeya. “So be it” said the Nara Narayanas and disappeared from there.

Markendeya spent his time thinking of witnessing the Bhagavat Maya, he began to see God in the pancha mahabhootas, praying to God with his mind, used to sit like that for days together!

Like this, forgetting himself, keeping his mind steady on the lotus feet of Sri Hari, Markendeya sat in tapas on the banks of Pushpabhadra river. Then, the evening dawned, all of a sudden, whirlwinds started blowing, sky was filled with dark clouds, thunder and lightning followed and the whole world got frightened. Rain started pouring with thunder and with a width of the trunk of an elephant, with great force. Soon, all sight was filled with water. It looked as if all the seas and oceans had become one. And in this water, the entire earth started floating and looked as though it would be drowned in the cosmic waters.

Markendeya started shivering in fear as the waters came near him and he began to float along with the water animals which began to bite him, everywhere there was fast whirlwinds, by the turbulent ocean. Nowhere, nothing was seen. One could not make out neither the earth, nor the sky, the directions, Then, Markendeya, became Atma Swaroopa and was caught for lakhs of years, in this deluge of water.

When he was like this, one day he noticed a small island on which there was a small banyan plant with many branches with flowers and fruit. Towards the ishanya side, one branch had spread on its small leaf, Markendeya saw a small baby, sleeping. The baby was shining so bright, as to drive away all darkness. It was blue in colour like a lotus, with a neck like that of a conch, broad chested as that of a champaka flower, beautiful in all respects, sweet curl of hair, lips that of coral and that wonderful child was holding its leg by its two hands and was sleeping while sucking the fore-toe of its foot.

In such a fierceful sea, beholding such a virtuous child, wonderful, peacefully sleeping, Markendeya was both astonished and felt happy and felt that all his sufferings had borne fruit that day. He became ecstatic and not satisfied even after seeing the baby for long, he came near the baby. At this very moment, as the baby was inhaling, the Rishi, in the size of a small mosquito, went into the nose of the baby and entered the heart of the baby.

There also he saw the same deluge of water, the island and the baby sleeping peacefully. Not only that, but the earth, sky, stars, mountains, seas, islands, people, devas , asuras, rivers, nations, houses, cities, villages, rishi ashramas, all varnashramas, time duration of the yugas, the saptha vasus necessary formlife – all these he observed. Also, he saw the hills of the Himalayas, his own ashram and himself seated in tapas, there.

The baby exhaled the air out and with it came out the Rishi, who fell on the Pralaya waters, looked at the baby who smiled at him.  Markendeya with full of affection, rushed to lift the baby, but it disappeared then and there. Soon Maha Pralaya, also disappeared. The Rishi who sat as before in Samadhi at his ashrama, woke up and looked all around. Then, he realized that Sriman Narayana, had shown him his Mahamaya and with great devotion began praising Sriman Narayana with many stotras, Sri Hari, Oh saviour of all of us, you are the only one who can help us from coming out of this fierceful ocean of life – so praying, he again entered into Samadhi state.

Then Parameshwara, along with His consort, Parvathi Devi, mounted on a Bull, followed by the Ganas, was passing overhead in the sky. Parvathi, referring to Markendeya, told Shiva – “In this Bhu-Loka, this Brahmin having attained siddhi and in Samadhi, how is he seated, just look at him. I want to shower my grace on him and then proceed”.

Shiva replied- “Alright, but he has not desired for our darshan or anugraha, he has not desired Mukti and has surrendered himself to the lotus feet of Sri Hari and such a person, what will he require of us?”. However, Parvathi Devi insisted on visiting Markendeya and soon they both stood in front of him. But Markendeya had forgotten himself, lost in his Samadhi, did not recognise the Divine Couple in front of him. Finally, Lord Eshwara entered his nose in vayu roopa and entered his heart.

There, the Rishi, noticed a very bright light and was astonished. He opened his eyes and noticed the glorious sight of Lord Eshwara and Devi Parvathi together. Lord Eshwara was in divya roopa, blue in colour, with jata and joota, with thrinethra, ten handed, with a body shining like that of a Sun, with tiger skin over his waist and He held in his ten hands the different weapons like the Shoola, Bow, Arrow, Thrishoola, Sword, etc.

With great devotion, Markendeya, commenced the worship of the Lord Eshwara and Devi Parvathi – with the giving of asana, arka, padhya, madhuparka, pushpa, gandha, dhoopa, dheepa and with folded hands said – “Oh Prabhu, Ananda Swaroopa, One who showers good for all the Lokas, in what way can I serve you and satisfy you? I can only offer my namaskaras, so kindly be pleased with it” – so saying the Rishi pleaded before the Lord, Oh God grace me with permanent and everlasting bhakti on the Paramatma and His bhaktas.

The Lord was pleased and said – “So be it” and further added that –“Your fame will be there till the end of the kalpas; henceforth you shall become a Trikala Jnani, let you get Atma Paramatma Vivechana Jnana and become a Vairagi”.

The End.

Om Shree Markendeya Maharishiye Namaha

BLOG NUMBER TEN - THE STORY OF DHUNDULI - AS NARRATED BY SHRI AMBARISHA VARMA

                                  The Story of Dhunduli

In the days gone by, a beautiful town was located on the banks of the river Tungabhadra. All the residents of that town performed the duties of their caste, spoke the truth and engaged themselves in the righteous activities.

There lived in that town, a Brahmana named Atmadeva, who was well versed in all the Vedas and was proficient in performing the rites as laid down in the Srutis and Smritis. He was glorious like a second Sun. Though rich, he made his living by alms.

His wife was called Dhunduli, was of good parentage, good looking: but she always wanted to rule over her husband. She indulged in the worldly gossip, was a talkative lady, cruel and miserly, though an expert in household activities, she was highly quarrelsome. The Brahmin couple lived and enjoyed their life. They had enough to satisfy their desires and achieve their objects. They had good lives to lead, yet they were not happy, as they were not blessed with any child.
With the object of getting a child, they began to gift cows, land, cloth and gold to the needy every day. In this manner they had spent half of their fortune, yet they did not beget a child. This matter, greatly worried Atmadeva.

One day, Atmadeva distressed as he was, left his house for the forest. At mid-day, feeling thirsty, he went up to a water tank to quench his thirst. The grief born of not having a child, had made him thin. After drinking water, Atmadeva, sat down near the Tank. After a duration of one muhurtha (48 minutes), a sanyasi arrived there for water. After the sanyasi had quenched his thirst, the Brahmin went before him, and bowed down to sanyasi.        The sanyasi enquired as to why Atmadeva was weeping and asked him the cause of his grief.

The Brahmin told the sanyasi that life was worthless without a son or daughter, of what use was all his wealth, the cow at his also was also barren, what for should he continue living? He had come there to end his life. The sage who was well established in Yoga, looked into the lines on the forehead of Atmadeva told Atmadeva-Give up all hope of getting a child for your next seven lives and further told him that there is all happiness in renunciation. The Brahmin asked as to how Viveka can help? Let me have a son or I will, in your very presence, give up my life, the only sweet thing in this world is family life crowded with sons, daughters and grandchildren.

Even after some counselling, seeing that the Brahmin was persisting in his demand, the sage who was rich in ascetic powers, gave a fruit to the Brahmin saying- “Let your wife eat this fruit, she will then give birth to a son, for one year your wife must practice-truthfulness, cleanliness, kind heartedness, give alms, take meals consisting of only one type of cereals and that too, once a day. By doing so, she will get a son of exceedingly sinless disposition.”

The Brahmin returned to his house and told his wife what the sage had said and gave her the fruit and went away somewhere. Crooked, as she was, the wife weepingly said to one of her friends – “I am greatly worried and so, will not eat this fruit: by eating this, I will conceive and get a belly, I will not be able to eat a full meal, do domestic work, cannot escape if dacoits attack the village, in case the foetus comes out in a slanting position during delivery, I may even lose my life. How will a delicate woman like me bear the pain? My husband’s sister may take away all whatever she wants from the house during my confinement, moreover it appears difficult for me to observe the vows”.

Thinking on these lines, she did not eat the fruit and when her husband enquired of her-whether she had eaten it, she said- yes. One day, her sister arrived there to see her and she told her sister, the whole story. The sister said-if this is the case, when a child is born to me, I shall give you the child. Till then, you act as if you are pregnant, give some money to my husband, who will hand over the child to you. I will so manipulate things that people will say that my child died when it was six months old and when I visit you daily, I will look after the child. In order to test the efficacy of the fruit, give it your cow just now, for it to eat. As is the nature of the women, the Brahmin’s wife, precisely carried out the instructions of her sister.

In due course, the sister’s child was secretly given to the Brahmin’s wife and all rejoiced to learn that a son was born to Atmadeva, who performed his jataka karma ceremony, gave away gifts and great festivities took place on the occasion. Later, Dhunduli told her husband-there is no milk in my breasts; let my sister suckle the child and nourish it. For the protection of his son, the husband did all that was told by her. The mother, Dhunduli, named the child as “Dhundhukari”.
After a few months, the cow also gave birth to a human child. The child looked divine, spotless and shone like gold. Atmadeva was delighted to see this and performed all purificatory ceremonies connected with the birth of the child. All people came to look at the divine child. Atmadeva named this child- Gokarna, since the ears of the child were looking like those of a cow.

With passage of time both the boys, grew up to adulthood; Dhundukari turned out be a wicked fellow, not observing the rules of conduct set for the Brahmins, extremely ill-tempered, committed theft, bore ill-will to one and all, set fire to others’ houses. He threw children into the wells, took delight in killing, moved about armed, oppressed the weak, and finally falling into evil company  of prostitutes, he squandered all paternal fortune, including the vessels at the house.

When all his property was lost, Atmadeva, wailed out loudly saying that an evil son is a source of agony. Why should he live anymore’ who will alleviate his suffering? As he was thinking like this, Gokarna, arrived there on the spot, shining like a Sun. Gokarna told Atmadeva- “There is no substance in this world; this world is full of misery and is a source of great infatuation; neither one’s children nor one’s wealth really belonged to one. Give up this notion that Dhundhukari is your son; through infatuation one’s lot is cast into hell. Therefore renounce everything now and retire to the forests; cease you to identify yourself with the body made of flesh, bone and blood. Constantly look upon this world as momentary. Taste the joy of dispassion and get established in devotion to the Lord.”

Renouncing his home in response to his son’s advice, Atmadeva, withdrew to the forest. Although he was on the wrong side of sixty years of age, he was a man of firm determination. Engaged in the service to Sri Hari, day and night, he attained the lotus feet of Lord Krishna.
His father having gone to forest, Dhundhukari, began to beat his mother. One day he threatened her saying-let me know where the money is or else I will thrash you with a burning stick. Afraid of this threat, Dhunduli, jumped into a well and died. Established in union with God, Gokarna, experienced neither joy nor sorrow. He had no enemies or friends and he left on a long pilgrimage.

Dhundhukari stayed on his house now along with five prostitutes, whom he had to maintain. In order to maintain his life, he perpetrated most heinous of crimes. One day those unchaste women planning to get all his wealth, tried to kill him by strangling, which when did not succeed, put live coal into his mouth. Distressed with extreme agony and burning caused by the fire, Dhundhukari finally died. They consigned the dead body to a pit and told all that their paramour had left for some distant place and would return soon. So saying, they all went away from that place.

Dhundhukari took the form of a dreadful spirit as a result of his evil deeds. Assuming the form of a whirlwind and tormented by cold and sunshine, he ever ran here and there, without any nourishment and remaining thirsty. After sometime, Gokarna learnt from the people that Dhundhukari had died. Realizing how helpless he was, Gokarna, performed the Shraddha ceremony with respect to Dhundhukari at Gaya; nay, to whatever place he visited, he did the Shraddha, there.

Roaming like this, Gokarna, came to his own town and slept at night in the courtyard of his own house. There, Dhundhukari, seeing his brother Gokarna there, revealed himself in most frightful forms like a ram, a buffalo, an elephant. Gokarna, concluding that it was someone in evil plight and remaining firm, spoke as follows. “Who ae you appearing like this? Tell me whether you are a spirit or friend or ogre?” The spirit submitted- “I am none other than Dhundhukari, your brother. Numberless sins I committed due to ignorance, I killed many men and in turn was killed by evil women. Attaining the form of an evil spirit in consequence, I am suffering too much now. I subsist on air alone, Oh brother! Ocean of compassion as you are, redeem me soon”. Gokarna said it is a matter of great surprise to me. How you have not been liberated even though I did Shraddha for you at Gaya? I am afraid that there is no other remedy. Point it out to me what I should do to redeem you. The spirit said- “My redemption will not come even if hundred shraddhas are done at Gaya. Think of some other remedy now. After instructing the spirit to remain at his abode, Gokarna taxed his brain to find out an expedient to redeem him.

Men of learning, those established in the Yoga, enlightened souls and exponents of Veda, even though they ransacked heaps of sacred books, did not see his liberation through any expedient. Finally, the verdict of the Sun God was accorded the supreme place by all. Gokarna, then arrested the movement of the Sun God, by virtue of Tapas. Gokarna prayed to the Sun God who said distinctly – Mukti will follow from Srimad Bhagavatha, give a complete reading to it in the course of a week.

Gokarna set himself to the task of expounding the Srimad Bhagavatha. Men flocked to that place from all the corners to listen to an exposition of Srimad Bhagavatha and for attenuation of their sins. There was a large concourse, which caused wonder even to the Gods. The moment Gokarna ascended the seat to start his exposition, the aforesaid spirit too, arrived there. Looking about for a seat, he saw there a bamboo, which had seven joints standing erect, entering the hollow at the base of the bamboo, he actually settled down there for hearing the exposition. Unable to remain fixed at one place in the air, gaseous as he was, he entered the bamboo.

Gokarna commenced the exposition in an audible tone. At the close of the day, when the exposition was adjourned, they say, a marvel took place. One of the seven joints of the bamboo (the last one) cracked with a noise while the good men present there, looked on. On the second day at sunset, the second joint burst open. Having opened this way, the seven joints of the bamboo in seven days, the spirit shred the form of a spectre through the hearing of all the twelve skandhas of the Bhagavatha. He appeared in a divine form dark brown like a cloud, clad in yellow silk, adorned with the strings of Tulasi beads, wearing a diadem on his head and decked with a pair of alligator shaped ear-rings.

He presently greeted his Gokarna, his brother and said – I have been rid by you of the deluded form of a ghost. Blessed is the exposition of the Bagavatha, which drives away sins, recent or old, minor or major, perpetrated in thought word and deed. When the joints of a dry bamboo could break open through the hearing of such an exposition, what wonder then if the knot of ignorance in the mind gets similarly snapped thereby? When the sacred water in the shape of such an exposition, which is highly efficacious in washing off the stain occasioned by the mud (sins) of worldly life gets treasured up in the mind, Mukti is declared, by the wise, as ensured.

Even while the spirit was talking like this, there arrived an aerial car manned by the denizens of the Vaikunta, with dazzling halo. The spirit of Dhundukari boarded the aerial car while all those assembled there looked on. Beholding the attendants of Lord Maha Vishnu. Gokarna asked them as to how only one car was brought there to carry one and not many to those who had also heard the exposition.

The servants of Lord Sri Hari said that although the exposition was heard by all assembled there, it had not been reflected upon in an equal degree of intensity, by everyone there. Dhundhukari had abstained from food and drink throughout the exposition. Cogitation was done by him thoroughly with a composed mind. Faith in the words of a preceptor, the thought of one’s wretchedness, subjugation of one’s mental aberrations and unfaltering devotion to the hearing- if these and other virtues are accomplished, then alone is the hearing efficacious. Saying so, they all ascended to Vaikunta, chanting the names and praises of Lord Sri Hari.

In the month of Shravana, Gokarna gave another exposition. Lord Sri Hari himself appeared there, along with his devotees, in a number of aerial cars. Out of delight, Sri Hari, blew his Conch-Panchajanya on the occasion. And thereafter embracing Gokarna, the Lord gave him a similar form to His own. Sri Hari, likewise instantly, transformed the other listeners too into many divine beings, dark brown in colour. All living beings that were there in that village including the dogs, the pariahs were also given seat in the aerial cars, by the grace of Gokarna. They were all transported to the many realms of Lord Sri Hari, the destination of the Yogis.

The End.

BLOG NUMBER NINE- BHU KAILASA

The Story of Bhu-Kailasa

In the last Satya Yuga, Para Brahma’s force, in the form of Lord Eshwara, was on the entire earth. Lord Eshwara was a friend and guide to all the human beings. He moved physically, all over the earth, spreading rays of peace, happiness and love all throughout the Satya Yuga- the account of Trust.

As the Yuga was drawing to a close, Lord Eshwara thought of staying in one place and from there, send out the vibrations of peace, happiness and love. So, as the next Yuga, Treta, neared, Lord Eshwara retired to Mt. Kailas and taking up his abode there, stayed there.

During this time, Ravana also lived, his life span extended to one full chatur yuga cycle, that is, 51840 human years. He was born in the line of Pulastya Maharishi, his father’s name was Vishravasu and mother’s name was Kaikasi. He was the eldest of three brothers, the other two being Kumbakarna and Vibhishana.

Ravana could speak in ten languages like that of animals, trees, plants etc. He performed intense tapas on Brahma and secured boons to the effect that except from human beings, death should not come to him, since to his prowess, humans were negligible. He defeated Kubera and took away the city of Lanka from him. Ravana married Mandodhari, daughter of Maya, who lived near Somali. Ravana used to live in China and was well versed in all the 64 arts/vidyas.

Ravana became mighty as the days passed; he conquered all the ashtadikpalakas and made them as stepping stones to ascend his throne; he made the Chaturmukha Brahma, his panchanga reader at his court. The Rakshasas advised him to tackle Maha Vishnu. He said Maha Vishnu is a very clever person, first I will tackle Lord Eshwara and then I will turn my attention on Maha Vishnu.

Ravana was thirty years in age, when he decided to beautify the city of Lanka, which was already beautiful. He thought of bringing the Mt. Kailas to Lanka. So, he went to the Himalayas, assuming a huge form, he tried to lift up the Kailas mountain. As it started shaking, the inhabitants of Kailas, were terrified about this. They approached Lord Eshwara for help. He just pressed the ground below His toe, Ravana’s body was crushed by the weight of the mountain.  Then, Ravana started praising Lord Eshwara, he made his spinal column as a Veena, the nerves as strings and praised Lord Eshwara. Ravana was the first one to make the instrument- Veena.

Pleased with him, Lord Eshwara, released him from the plight and presented him a sword. Thanking the Lord, Ravana returned to his palace. One day, Ravana saw his mother Kaikasi, worshipping a sand linga, and as he was watching, the waters from the sea, came and washed away the sand shivalinga.

Then he told his mother that he will go and bring the Atmalinga of Lord Eshwara himself for her to worship. Saying this, he went to the Himalayas and performed severe penance on Lord Eshwara in order to secure His Atmalinga.

The Gods and the Rishis fearing that he may be given the Atmalinga, requested Goddess Saraswathi to sit on the Ravana’s tongue at the time of him asking for a boon. This Goddess Saraswathi did. At the end of the penance, Lord Eshwara, appeared to Ravana, alongwith his consort, Parvathi. The Lord asked what boon do you ask from me? Ravana saw in front of him the Lord and His consort and sought for Parvathi, who was most beautiful and charming. To this, the Lord said – So be it and Ravana felt very happy to have secured Parvathi. As per the boon, Parvathi began to follow Ravana towards his city, Lanka.

On the way, Narada maharishi meets Ravana who was looking very joyous and proud. Narada asked Ravana what is the matter? You look so happy. Ravana answered-Look behind and tell me who is there, it is none other than the Parvathi! I have secured her so I am happy. Narada said there is no Parvathi, you are just talking wildly. Ravana turns behind and looks, he sees a huge and terrible form of Kali, that is, Parvathi, in her original form. Ravana rushes back to Kailas and started shouting at Lord Eshwara and finally returns home, unsuccessful in his attempt to bring Atmalinga.

As the time passed, Ravana, once again thought of the Lord’s Atmalinga; again he set out on his penance, more careful than before, performed intense tapas on Lord Eshwara. As before, Lord Eshwara appeared in front of him and this time, careful as he was, Ravana asked for Lord Eshwara’s Atmalinga. To this, the Lord gave away his Atmalinga to Ravana. He was asked not to keep it on the ground, anywhere during the journey to Lanka.

Carrying the Atmalinga, Ravana set out towards his city. At this incident, all the Gods and the Rishis felt shocked, as Ravana was already very powerful and now with Lord Eshwara’s Atmalinga, he would become invincible. So they thought of a plan and approaching Lord Vigneshwara, set him out ahead of Ravana, on the route. As Ravana came near the present place of Gokarna, close to the sea, the Sun was about to set.

As he belonged to the twice born caste – a Brahmin – he regularly performed his sandhyavandana. To perform his evening prayers before sunset, he looked around for someone who would hold the Atmalinga, till he finished his prayers. There, he sees a cow-herd boy (Lord Vigneshwara in disguise) and asks him to hold the Atmalinga, so that he could quickly return from his prayers.

The boy agreed to hold the Atmalinga on one condition, that is, before he would call out the name Ravana thrice, Ravana should come and collect the Linga, back. To this Ravana agreed and gave the Linga into the hands of the boy.

As Ravana turned and walked towards the waters, the boy called out once and after this twice again while Ravana was praying and the boy quickly placed the Linga on the ground and stood aside.
Ravana after finishing his prayers, comes and sees that the Linga is on the ground, he gets very angry with the boy, he attempts to lift the Linga from its position, using all his strength.

He fails in his attempts, but twelve pieces come out during his ordeal. Ravana threw these twelve pieces in the 12 directions. These are the 12 jyotirlingas in India. At such distant places, the pieces landed.

Ravana does not give up his attempts easily. He even goes below the earth to lift the Atmalinga and again he fails. A huge cave formed over the spot and the most portion of the Linga goes below the earth. And after the pieces were removed, the Linga appeared like that of the two ears of a cow and hence the name Go-karna is given to this place. Finally, Ravana returned to his city-Lanka.

The people living at Gokarna and all over the earth, enjoyed the conditions like those of Kailasa Loka, they were all divine and peaceful and happy and on account of this peace, the place came to be called as Bhu-Kailasa, all over the earth. In the coming Satya Yuga, it will be the turn of Maha Vishnu, to live with all human beings on the earth physically, and spread out the divine rays of Truth, Love, Peace and Happiness.

So, the Rishis, during the solar eclipse on 16th February 1980, undertook the work of transferring the force of Para Brahma, which was at Gokarna, the Lord Eshwara’s Atma Linga to Puri Jagannath. Now, it will be Maha Vishnu’s turn to live with us and the whole earth will be called Bhu-Vaikunta for the coming 20,000 years.

The End.

BLOG NUMBER EIGHT- MATSYA AVATAR

Matsya Avatara

The following was narrated by Shri Ambarisha Varma, on 25.04.1980

Long long ago, the powerful King Hayagreeva ruled on the earth; he had conquered all the continents and the islands on the earth. His misrule commenced and Dharma began to decline on the earth. Shukracharya, his Guru, always directed him to commit evil acts. As Hayagreeva had conquered the entire earth, he asked his Guru, what else was there for him to conquer? Shukracharya said- why don’t you try conquering the ashtadikpalakas? Hayagreeva soon started to raid the ashtadikpalakas one by one, and conquered all of them. The inhabitants of these lokas were put to lot of trouble and misery, were made to repeat “Om Hayagreevaya namaha” and to worship him.

After this, one day, while seated on his throne, discussing with his Guru and other ministers, his Guru suddenly pointed out to him that, whatever he had done was alright, but the Guru was able to see that something in future will become more powerful than Hayagreeva. This power would destroy the adharma of Hayagreeva and was already born at Brahmaloka. Hayagreeva enquired as to what that power was? Shukracharya said instead of speaking about it, let us go and see it for ourselves.

Both Hayagreeva and  Shukracharya rushed to Brahmaloka. There, looking at the glorious Brahmaloka, Hayagreeva, felt stunned and asked his Guru as to how that loka was left out for him to conquer? Shukracharya said – do not think on these lines now, be serious about the purpose of our visit, and later let us see about conquering this loka.

Just then, a period of one manvantara was coming to a close on the earth. The Chaturmukha Brahma was about to take a little respite from his incessant work. There were four small children-Rig, Yaju, Sama and Atharva, playing in front of Lord Brahma and their mother-Devi Saraswathi.

Shukracharya and Hayagreeva, watched this scene, unnoticed in their invisible forms.

After a while, Devi addressing Brahma told him – I have some work inside, look after the children and she disappeared from there. Shukracharya told Hayagreeva- now the time seems to have come for a little action. Let us first continue to watch. Since it was time for Brahma to take a little rest, he slowly started to yawn and soon went into yoganidra. The four children observing that their father having gone into yoganidra, sat in meditation in front of Lord Brahma.

Then, Shukracharya, said this is the opportunity to snatch these children. Hayagreeva could not understand- why snatch them and run away from there? Shukracharya told him there was no time to explain everything to him in detail now, these children when they grow up, will write the four Vedas – the teachings of which will be followed by the people living on the earth and all the lokas of ashtadikpalakas and then there will be no room for you. You will be burnt away due to the power of the Vedas. So it is better you destroy these children now itself. Even then Hayagreeva did not understand what his Guru was telling him. He said- I want to love these children. Shukracharya said- one day, they will destroy you. Shukracharya, with great difficulty, succeeded in making Hayagreeva snatch the four children, rushed back to the earth, and Hayagreeva found a place to hide them. Again Shukracharya told him-destroy these children, instead Hayagreeva began to pour out all love to them and told his Guru that he would continue to keep them in hiding.

Hayagreeva took the children below the ocean, hid them in a cave there, its location was not known to anyone. After this, Devi returned and finds Brahma is in yoganidra and the children were not to be seen. She wakes up Brahma and enquired about her children. He said he was not aware of their missing. She searches here and there, the news spreads to the entire deva loka and to the Rishis. The Rishis decided to inform the news to Lord Maha Vishnu. They all rushed to Vaikunta and come into the presence of the Lord, who was acting as though He was asleep. After hearing them, Maha Vishnu told them not to worry and that He will do the needful, at the appropriate time.

On the earth, there lived a God-fearing King called Shraddha Deva. One morning he visited a particular lake for his ablutions and prayers.  He had taken in a little water into his hands when he noticed a tiny fish in the hollow of his palms, talking to him. The King put this fish into a bigger vessel, it continued to grow big for a well, a tank and finally he took it to the ocean. At the ocean, the fish told him- there would be a big deluge of water in seven days, you prepare a big ship, I shall arrive there with a big horn. You must tie me up and Vasuki to the big ship and I shall keep you safe from the waves and the deluge and till the re-appearance of the land once again.

Jala pralaya took place soon. The entire land disappeared and there was water everywhere. Lord Maha Vishnu, in the form of a fish, entered the waters and began searching for the four children of Brahma. After a while, the Lord located the hiding place, which was heavily guarded by Hayagreeva. Both He and Hayagreeva fought for a very long time, Hayagreeva took shelter under the shadow of the fish, sometimes went under the seabed and the fish could not tackle him fully. The Lord was unable to find the rakshasa and thought of a plan. He said that a boon will be conferred upon Hayagreeva to make him a mighty King at the   end of Kali Yuga and that he could rule over a rakshasa desha on the earth. He would enjoy all the powers and benefits befitting an Emperor, until then he could live long and not be destroyed: accept this boon, the Lord said. Hayagreeva thought it over that the boon was worthwhile and continued his fight. The Lord killed Hayagreeva and the four children were rushed to Brahma Loka.

After this, Shraddha Deva, received the fish with great reverence and tied Vasuki to the ship. He collected all the species of animals and this ship also carried the saptarishis.
The fish pulled the ship all over the great waters, for several years.
During that time, the fish gave Shraddha Deva all necessary knowledge and made him fit to rule over the earth once again. Soon, the waters started receding and land appeared. After this, the fish turned into Maha Vishnu, blessed Shraddha Deva and disappeared in the sky, that is, He went back to Vaikunta.

Hayagreeva was born at the end of Kali Yuga as “Matsya Tunga” - Maotse Tung and was a great ruler of the modern China. He had ruled China gloriously. In the winter of 1972, he met his death at the hands of Maha Vishnu. Since Kali Yuga came to as close only in 1974, there was a double, who acted as Maotse Tung, and this double died in 1974. The original Maotse Tung, had entered the Bosom of the Lord in 1972.

The End.
